Scapegrace Fortitude Limited Release V

Fortitude V returns to the series’ main cask regime of virgin French oak, with an outturn of 8,643 bottles bottled at 46% ABV. It’s made in Central Otago, where a dry inland climate and large seasonal temperature swings increase spirit movement in and out of the wood, accelerating extraction and giving the whisky a more immediate oak driven structure.

Virgin French oak brings a specific balance. Fresh oak contains a higher load of extractable compounds, so you get quicker build of flavour density and a more defined finish than you’d expect from refill casks. French oak also tends to contribute firmer tannins than American oak, so the palate doesn’t just go sweet. It tightens as it develops, with dryness and spice arriving alongside vanilla sweetness. Chemically, ellagitannins provide the grip and structure, while toasted lignin breakdown products contribute aromatic spice and vanilla style notes.

In profile, Fortitude leans into richer, sweeter oak influence while keeping a controlled, drying frame through the finish. At 46% ABV it holds texture and aromatic lift, letting the oak driven weight sit cleanly without becoming hot or thin.
