Scapegrace Vanguard is a New Zealand single malt produced in Central Otago, a region defined by sharp seasonal swings that help drive active maturation in cask. Bottled at 46% ABV, it is presented without colouring and without chill filtration, keeping both texture and natural colour intact.

Maturation is carried out in virgin French oak, which is a major part of the whisky’s structure. Fresh oak contains a higher load of extractable wood compounds than refill casks, so it tends to build flavour faster and more assertively. Expect elevated levels of oak lactones (vanilla and coconut style sweetness), plus tannins that add grip and a drying edge through the finish. The result is a profile that leans into sweet spice, fresh wood and a defined, structured mouthfeel rather than soft rounded sherry richness.

In style terms, Vanguard sits on the cleaner side of the Scapegrace range, with the oak providing the main flavour architecture. Orchard fruit notes and creamy vanilla lead, followed by developing spice and a firmer oak finish that stays controlled at 46% rather than turning hot or aggressive.
