Description
Mars Shinshu in Miyada, Nagano, owned by Hombo Shuzo, is the source distillery for this Asagi Madara 2021 release, labelled as a single malt. The 2021 edition draws on three cask types: American white oak, Ex-Scotch and Ex-Bourbon barrels, which together provide a varied maturation base for the NAS bottling at 48% for the Japanese market.
The use of Ex-Scotch casks alongside bourbon and American white oak adds a layer of influence from previously matured Scotch whisky wood, contributing a drier, more spice-driven element alongside the vanilla and orchard fruit that Ex-Bourbon and American oak tend to give. Mars Shinshu's clean, altitude-influenced house character ties the three cask contributions together at 48% in a bottling of depth and breadth.
