Description
The Mars Komagatake 2023 is the annual release from Hombo Shuzo's Mars Shinshu distillery in Miyada, Nagano prefecture, bottled for global markets at cask strength from Ex-Bourbon cask maturation. The distillery, which sits at one of Japan's highest elevations in the Central Alps, uses the cool mountain climate to develop a naturally clean, fresh spirit over time.
The 2023 release shows a profile led by fresh fruit, honey and dried fruit with a nutty sweetness and a light sherried note suggesting some sherry-influenced casks may have been included in the vatting alongside the primary Ex-Bourbon component. At 50% cask strength the texture is generous without the intensity of some of the higher-ABV Komagatake expressions, making this a well-balanced and accessible entry into the annual Komagatake line, carrying the house's characteristic clean mountain character.
