Description
Distilled in 2018 at Hombo Shuzo's Mars Shinshu distillery in Miyada, Nagano prefecture, this single cask Mars Komagatake was matured for 6 years entirely in new Virgin Oak before La Maison du Whisky bottled it at natural cask strength in 2025 for the French market. Virgin Oak is an unusual choice for Japanese whisky and pushes the spirit in a bolder, more assertive direction than the distillery's typical Ex-Bourbon bottlings.
New wood brings fast tannin extraction even in the cool Alpine climate of Nagano, so 6 years in Virgin Oak produces prominent vanilla, toasty oak spice and a drying grip alongside the cleaner cereal notes of the Komagatake house character. At 62.8% this is the most powerful of the Mars Shinshu LMDW single casks in this range, with the wood very much centre stage. Dilution opens it significantly and reveals the lighter, mountain-fresh base beneath the oak structure.
