The Mars Komagatake 2021 is the annual vintage-dated release from Hombo Shuzo's Mars Shinshu distillery in Miyada, Nagano prefecture, assembled from spirit matured in both Bourbon Barrels and Oloroso Sherry Casks and bottled for global distribution. Mars Shinshu sits at one of Japan's highest altitudes in the Central Alps, and the cool mountain climate shapes a naturally clean, lighter style of single malt.
The Bourbon Barrel component brings honey, vanilla and fresh fruit, while the Sherry Cask addition adds dried fruit, chocolate and a gentle dark sugar depth. The resulting marriage shows the range of flavours Hombo Shuzo achieves through its two-cask approach. Bottled at cask strength at 48%, the 2021 release sits on the lighter end of the cask strength range for this distillery, balancing fruit-forward approachability with enough concentration to reward sipping neat or with a drop of water.
