Description
Founders Reserve is the flagship Ruby of Sandeman, a house founded in London in 1790 by the Scot George Sandeman and now one of the best known Port producers of Portugal's Douro Valley. It is built from a field blend of Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cao, fortified mid-fermentation to keep natural grape sweetness.
Where a wood-aged Tawny turns nutty and pale, this Reserve Ruby is aged reductively for about five years in large vats that limit contact with air. The method preserves the deep ruby colour and the concentrated dark-fruit character, giving more depth and structure than a basic Ruby while staying young and vivid.
The result is intense red cherry, blackberry and ripe plum layered with dark chocolate and warm baking spice, medium-bodied with a gently drying grip and a sweet, warming finish. It suits a cheese board, works well with dark chocolate desserts, and stands up to charcuterie or a post-dinner glass on its own.
