Description
This 40 Years Old Tawny sits at the top of Sandeman's aged range, from the Douro house founded in London in 1790. The stated age reflects the average maturity of the blend, drawn from reserves of red Douro Port fortified mid-fermentation and then given very long ageing in seasoned oak casks in the Vila Nova de Gaia lodges.
Four decades of slow oxidation transform the wine. The colour fades to old gold and amber, the tannins dissolve and the fruit concentrates into an intense, layered whole as water and alcohol gently evaporate through the wood. This is the most developed expression of the Tawny style, prized for its depth and length.
The bouquet is broad and expressive, suggesting vanilla, oak and honey, with the palate carrying complex dried fruit, spice and nuts through a very long finish. Serve in a small measure at the end of a meal, with coffee and dark chocolate, or beside a cigar. It arrives in a gift box.
