Description
This is an aged Tawny Port from Sandeman, the house founded in 1790 and today part of the Sogrape group, matured in the lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia across the river from Porto. Fortified Douro wine forms the base, and the 30 year designation reflects the average age of a blend drawn from casks holding wine between roughly 25 and 40 years old.
The style is shaped by long oxidative ageing in small seasoned oak casks. Slow, controlled contact with air and wood strips the wine of its original red colour, turning it amber and gold, and drives the fresh fruit toward the concentrated nut, spice and dried-fruit register that defines an old Tawny. Bottled at 20% alcohol, it is ready to drink without decanting.
Expect old-gold amber in the glass and aromas of honey and warm spice, with dried apricot, hazelnut and vanilla on a rich yet fresh palate that carries caramel and a faint saline lift on the long finish. Serve lightly cool at 14 to 16C, on its own after dinner, or alongside walnuts, aged hard cheese or a slice of almond tart.
