Description
This is a Fine Ruby Port from Ramos Pinto, the Douro house founded in 1880 and part of the Champagne Louis Roederer group. It is built from the classic Douro red varieties, fortified mid-fermentation to retain natural grape sweetness and deep colour.
Where a Tawny is aged oxidatively in small casks, this Ruby is matured for a short time in large wooden vats that limit contact with air. That reductive approach preserves the dense red hue and the bright, primary fruit, giving a young and vigorous style rather than the nutty, oxidised character of an aged Tawny.
The wine shows a deep, red-toned colour with aromas of cherry, blackberry, plum and raspberry, and the palate is fresh, vibrant and fruity with a persistent finish that leaves ripe fruit echoing on the palate. Serve it lightly cool and pour it after dinner, or match it with dark chocolate, berry desserts or a firm cheese.
