Powers Gold Label is the flagship blend of a brand that predates most of its rivals, the Powers name having moved from John's Lane in Dublin to Midleton in Co. Cork. Bottled here at 43.2% for the European market, this no age statement version runs a touch stronger than the standard 40%, giving a little more grip to the pot still heavy recipe that Irish Distillers builds it on.
Ex-bourbon maturation lends vanilla, honey and gentle oak spice, the American oak framing a blend that leans harder on pot still than most. That shows as black pepper, clove and an oily texture over soft cereal sweetness. Triple distilled and unpeated, it is a characterful everyday Irish whiskey, the extra strength making it a fuller pour neat and a sturdier base in a cocktail.
