Description
Louis Roederer is a family owned Champagne house in Reims, and Collection is its multi-vintage Brut, built around a solera-style perpetual reserve that carries library wines forward each year. This magnum shows the 245 iteration, drawing on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. It follows the traditional method, with second fermentation in the bottle and long ageing on the lees, which builds the biscuity, bready complexity that sits under the fresh fruit. The Brut dosage keeps the finish dry and precise.
The colour is bright gold with a fine, persistent bead. The nose brings apple, pear and citrus peel with a touch of white peach, over toasted bread, biscuit and a light almond note from time on the lees. The palate is structured and balanced, with a dry, mineral edged finish and good length, helped by the slow, even development the magnum allows. Serve at around 9 to 10 degrees in a tulip glass. It works as an aperitif and alongside shellfish, white fish and hard nutty cheese.
