Description
Kilbeggan is the oldest licensed distillery site in Ireland, working since 1757 on the Brusna river in Co. Westmeath and restored to production by Cooley in 2007, with a 180 year old pot still in service. This 2019 limited release returned the house to single pot still whiskey, a mash of malted and unmalted barley, double distilled in small batches and bottled at 43%.
Ex-bourbon casks frame the spirit gently, honey, fresh orchard fruit and citrus riding over the peppery, gingery prickle that unmalted barley brings, with a fragrant, lightly oily texture and a faint mineral edge. The old stills work slowly and it shows in the softness of the spirit. At 43% it is an approachable introduction to Ireland's own whiskey style, made on the site where so much of its history happened.
