Description
From the Huntly bottler Duncan Taylor, a 25 year old Glen Moray, distilled in 1989, from cask 5205, bottled at 54.3%, one of 226 bottles. Glen Moray is a fresh, fruity Speyside malt from the town of Elgin in Moray. It closed in 1910 and reopened in 1923 under Macdonald and Muir of Glenmorangie.
The spirit was worked through the stills for a light, sweet make, for a light, easy spirit with a soft malt. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, oak lactones lending vanilla and a little coconut. Through the evaporative decades the spirit concentrates, esters folding into dried fruit, beeswax and a soft honey. A gentle maturation suits the light make, the orchard fruit growing richer with time. River Lossie water and the tall stills give the light Glen Moray make. The accessible, fruity make is the base for the distillery's many cask finishes. Its water is drawn from the River Lossie, which runs past the distillery at Elgin.
At cask strength 54.3% it is full bodied. Green apple, honey and a gentle oak, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A baked apple and a gentle spice lift it. It finishes light, fresh and fruity. This is Glen Moray, a pioneer of cask finishing.
