Description
The Highland bottler Adelphi bottled this Glen Moray, a 23 year old, distilled in 1991, from cask 9416, bottled at 53.4%, one of 190 bottles. Glen Moray is a light, sweet Speyside malt, founded in 1897 on the banks of the River Lossie. It was built on Gallow Hill at Elgin, the old site of the town's hangings.
It was drawn off the stills for a clean, fruity Speyside spirit, building a light, accessible character of orchard fruit and vanilla. Ex-Bourbon casks held it, the gentle American oak letting the light fruit lead. Through the evaporative decades the spirit concentrates, esters folding into dried fruit, beeswax and a soft honey. Years in oak round the spirit, the green apple deepening to honey and dried fruit. A pioneer of wine cask finishing, Glen Moray has long layered fruit over its light malt. It closed in 1910 and reopened in 1923 under Macdonald and Muir of Glenmorangie.
At a hearty 53.4% it carries real weight. A clean, fruity sweetness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Beneath it run green apple, pear and a soft vanilla. The finish runs light, fruity and clean. This is a light Speyside malt from the banks of the Lossie.
