Description
This Glen Moray was bottled by the Glasgow bottler Douglas Laing, a 15 year old, distilled in 1999, from cask DL 10420, bottled at 48.4%, one of 332 bottles. Glen Moray, founded in 1897 in a former brewery, is one of Speyside's best loved malts. It closed in 1910 and reopened in 1923 under Macdonald and Muir of Glenmorangie.
It was drawn off the stills for a clean, fruity Speyside spirit, building a light, accessible character of orchard fruit and vanilla. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, oak lactones lending vanilla and a little coconut. Through oxidative maturity esters concentrate, the apple turning honeyed and a soft dried fruit creeping in. Years in oak round the spirit, the green apple deepening to honey and dried fruit. It runs a large still house at Elgin, expanded over the years to meet demand. Active wood frames the fruit without overwhelming the light Speyside spirit.
At a hearty 48.4% it carries real weight. A fresh, fruity sweetness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The mouthfeel is light, the fruit carried on a clean body. The finish is long, fruity and clean. This is the easy, fruity malt of Elgin.
