The Whisky Fair selected this 21 Years Old Cooley, distilled in 2001 and bottled in 2023 from a single Amarone barrel, cask 144978, in a run of 239 bottles. Amarone casks are a rare finish for Irish whiskey, and their dried grape intensity sits well on the double distilled malt Cooley makes in Co. Louth.

Ex-bourbon years built the base of orchard fruit and vanilla before the Amarone wood layered on dried cherry, dark chocolate and a faintly bitter red wine tannin that keeps the sweetness in check. At its cask strength of 55.8% the fruit is dense and dark, opening with water into raisin and soft malt. A single cask for the European fair circuit, and an unusual meeting of Veneto wine and Irish malt.
