Description
Chichibu for Gion 3 Years Old 2008 is a single malt distilled in the distillery's opening year and bottled in 2012 as a single cask expression at 62.1% cask strength, selected for the Japanese retailer Gion. It is one of the earliest single-cask releases from Chichibu in Saitama, produced by Venture Whisky under Ichiro Akuto, and its provenance as a founding-vintage bottling makes it a significant piece of the distillery's history.
Three years in an Ex-Bourbon cask gives just enough time for the American oak to begin lending vanilla and light coconut to Chichibu's naturally fruit-forward and energetic new make, while the brevity of the maturation means the spirit's own character dominates rather than the wood. At 62.1% cask strength the bottling is uncompromising, and the Japan-market exclusivity adds a further layer of scarcity.
