Chichibu distillery in Saitama prefecture, established in 2008, has become a fixture among international independent bottlers who have sought out even its shorter-matured single casks for their energy and purity. This single cask was distilled in 2012, matured for six years in Ex-Bourbon wood, and selected by Speciality Drinks for an event release in 2018.
Six years in Ex-Bourbon oak draws out Chichibu's fruit-forward new make character in a direct and uncomplicated way: orchard fruit, vanilla cream and light caramel from the American wood, with the distillery's signature citric freshness keeping the sweetness from becoming heavy. At a high cask strength of 62.3%, the spirit has real presence on the palate. The event bottling format reflects the growing tradition of limited single cask releases that have helped shape Chichibu's collectible reputation.
