Description
Chichibu distillery in Saitama prefecture, founded in 2008 by Ichiro Akuto, has become one of the key reference points for the Scotch Malt Whisky Society's Japanese portfolio. This bottling, catalogued as 130.9, was distilled in 2015 and bottled in 2023 for the European market after eight years in a single Ex-Bourbon cask.
Eight years in American oak Ex-Bourbon wood has developed Chichibu's typically vibrant and citrus-edged new make into a rounder, more vanilla-driven expression while retaining the fresh fruit that defines the house style. The balance between the wood's sweetness and the distillery's natural energy is characteristic of Chichibu at this age in this cask type. At cask strength 60.2% it arrives with body and presence. The second SMWS release from this Saitama distillery in the batch, it pairs naturally with its 130.7 predecessor.
