Description
Bottega makes Petalo as a sweet Moscato sparkling in the aromatic Italian tradition, working from Moscato Bianco. The fermentation is stopped early in pressurised steel tanks, which keeps the alcohol low at around 6.5 per cent and holds a good deal of the grape's natural sugar, so the wine stays sweet, grapey and delicately fizzy rather than fully sparkling. This tank approach is what preserves the intense floral, musky aromatics that mark good Moscato, and the magnum and gift box make it a table centrepiece for a celebration.
The colour is a pale, bright straw with a soft, fine bead. The nose is openly aromatic, with peach, apricot, orange blossom and honeysuckle, and the palate is sweet and juicy with clear grape fruit and a light, animating finish that avoids heaviness. Serve well chilled at 6 to 8 degrees in a small wine glass or a flute. It is at its best with dessert, matching fruit tarts, light pastries and creamy puddings.
