Description
Yoichi Single Malt Woody and Vanillic is a no age statement, cask strength domestic release from Nikka's Yoichi distillery on the Sea of Japan coast of Hokkaido, owned by Asahi. Bottled at 55% in 2015 as part of the Japan-only 500ml series exploring single facets of the distillery's range, it draws on a combination of bourbon casks, sherry casks and plain oak casks.
The cask variety directs the profile toward vanilla and wood spice, with the coal-gas note from direct-fired distillation grounding the spirit's sweeter side. A gentle sherry layer from the Oloroso component adds dried fruit and warmth in the background, while the plain oak contributes tannin and structure. At 55% the whisky is bold and direct, suited to those who want Yoichi's characteristic Hokkaido weight with the emphasis on wood and sweetness over peat and brine.
