Description
Mars Shinshu in Miyada, Nagano, sits at around 800 metres in the Central Alps and is operated by Hombo Shuzo. This single cask single malt from the 2019 vintage spent five years in a single American white oak cask before being drawn at cask strength at 59.8% by La Maison du Whisky for the French market.
American white oak without prior bourbon seasoning gives a different wood interaction than a used barrel: the new wood contributes more directly to the spirit, adding vanilla and a firmer wood structure alongside the distillery's characteristic clean, mountain-influenced fruit. The five year maturation at elevation in Nagano, where cooler temperatures moderate the pace of extraction, produces a precise and clean cask strength expression.
