Mars Shinshu in Nagano's Central Alps is the production site of Hombo Shuzo, and this single malt from the 2016 vintage spent five years maturing first in a bourbon barrel before a finish in Calvados casks, a pairing that bridges the house's clean mountain style with the apple-orchard influence of French apple brandy wood.
Bottled at 61% for the French market, the combination of Ex-Bourbon base and Calvados finish produces notes of fresh fruit alongside new wood and a lively spirit backbone. The distillery's characteristic clean, high-altitude character comes through in the structure, with the Calvados wood rounding the edges and adding a distinct orchard-fruit dimension.
