Description
The Mars 2014 is a five year old single malt from Mars Shinshu, Hombo Shuzo's distillery in Miyada, Nagano, vatted across three cask types, Bourbon Barrel, American White Oak and Oloroso Sherry, before bottling at 47% for the French market in 2019. The multi-cask approach places it between the single cask individual expressions and a fully blended release, seeking complementary wood contributions rather than a single cask's direct voice.
The combination of bourbon sweetness, the subtle spice of American White Oak and the dried fruit and colour of Oloroso Sherry gives the whisky more dimension than a straight Ex-Bourbon maturation alone would deliver at five years. At 47%, described as cask strength for this particular vatting, the bottling is textured and warm without the full intensity of the higher-proof single cask releases. A considered French market expression of the Mars Shinshu house style.
