Description

This is a no age statement, cask strength Chichibu bottled in 2016 at 58% from Ex-Bourbon casks, released for an event. Chichibu distillery in Saitama prefecture was founded in 2008 by Ichiro Akuto under the Venture Whisky banner, making it one of the earliest of Japan's modern craft wave. The NAS format here reflects the distillery's practice of releasing young, vibrant spirit unburdened by age claims when the cask character is ready.

The Ex-Bourbon maturation gives vanilla, caramel and the oily, full-bodied mouthfeel that American oak is known for, and the recorded flavour notes add citrus, honey and malt extract to that framework: a profile that is generous, approachable and distinctly Chichibu in its clean fruit-and-cereal orientation. At 58% the bottling is lively and direct without being aggressive, and the combination of honey and oiliness makes for a satisfying texture across the palate.
