Description
Chichibu's Saitama distillery has worked with a wide range of cask types since its founding in 2008, and the combination of Ex-Bourbon and Stout barrels appears across several of the more adventurous releases from founder Ichiro Akuto's Venture Whisky. This is cask number 4548, a 2011 vintage bottled in 2018 at 7 years old and cask strength for La Maison du Whisky in France.
The dual cask maturation brings a lively interplay between the vanilla and soft cereal of the Ex-Bourbon barrel and the dark-grain roast and earthy depth that stout barrels contribute. The flavour notes of fresh fruit, greenhouse and yeast sit above this base layer, reflecting the distillery's typically bright and fruit-forward new make. At 57.4%, the spirit is measured and composed, presenting the unusual cask combination with the energy characteristic of young Chichibu at its most expressive.
