    Overproof Rum

Hampden's LROK is a lighter, more moderate mark than the house's fiercest funk bombs, and this 2021 single cask was selected by La Maison and Velier for the Belgian importer The Nectar. The pairing of a respected Trelawny distillery with an unusual cask is exactly the kind of experiment that draws attention, here a Fundador sherry cask at full strength 63%, unsweetened.

The cask, however, runs the show. Dried dates, musty wood and orange peel dominate the nose, the palate turns sherried, bitter and musty with a thread of banana, and the finish is peppery, smoky and winey. Tropical ageing has deepened the colour, but the tannic, wine-soaked character largely overwrites the Hampden underneath, which is hard to spot beneath the cask. This is a polarising, experiment-forward bottling worth a cautious look for drinkers who chase intense wine-finished rum, though anyone seeking classic Hampden funk is better served elsewhere. Honest about what it is: a cask-driven curiosity, not a showcase of the distillery.
