A cask-strength single cask Caroni from the legendary closed Trinidad distillery, a Heavy 23 Year Old 1998 under Hunter Laing’s Kill Devil label, molasses-based, aged in ex-bourbon oak and presented at a towering 60.9%.
Description
Caroni is the legendary Trinidad distillery that closed in 2003, its rescued casks now the most mythologised in rum. This single cask is a Heavy 23 Year Old Caroni, vintage 1998, bottled under Hunter Laing's Kill Devil label, the Scottish whisky house's natural, non-chill-filtered rum line. Drawn from Trinidadian molasses, matured in ex-bourbon oak and bottled at cask strength, 60.9%, it comes from Caroni's prized heavy side. The signature for these heavy marques is an industrial intensity, typically tar, diesel, burnt rubber and machine oil over dark tropical fruit, smoke, brine and deep oak. Expect that savoury, oily, petrol-and-fruit Caroni character at full power, a purist's pour from a finite source.
