A sweet Mauritian rum liqueur from Grays under the New Grove label, built on molasses rum and honey at a gentle 26%, soft and easy with a clear honeyed character, made for light cocktails rather than neat sipping.
Description
Grays New Grove Honey Rum Liqueur is a flavoured rum liqueur from Grays in Mauritius, made from a molasses rum base sweetened and flavoured with honey. This is openly a liqueur, not a dry aged rum, and it should be approached as such, a soft, sweet, honey-led drink rather than a serious sipper.
The nose and palate are dominated by honey, with a light, easy texture and just a faint touch of alcohol showing through. At a low 26% it is gentle and undemanding, which is exactly the point. On its island it is a popular base for light cocktails, where its honeyed sweetness softens and lengthens a drink, and it works well over ice or stretched into a long mixer. Anyone expecting the grassy snap of a Mauritian cane spirit should look elsewhere, but as an honest, sweet honey liqueur for relaxed mixing it does its job pleasantly.
