Description
From the Glasgow bottler Douglas Laing, a 15 year old Glen Moray, distilled in 2007, from cask DL 15888, bottled at 48.4%, one of 330 bottles. Glen Moray is a Speyside single malt and a pioneer of wine cask finishing. It closed in 1910 and reopened in 1923 under Macdonald and Muir of Glenmorangie.
Worked through the stills for a light, sweet make, for a light, easy spirit with a soft malt. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, vanillin lending vanilla under the apple. Into oxidative maturity, slow air ingress builds fruity ethyl esters (apple and pear) and a honeyed depth. The clean, fruity spirit shows the cask clearly, vanilla and fruit to the fore. Most of its malt matures first in American oak ex-Bourbon before any cask finish. It was built on Gallow Hill at Elgin, the old site of the town's hangings. Its make is a key malt in the Cutty Sark and Label 5 blends.
At 48.4%, undiluted, it is deep and fruity. Baked apple, vanilla and a creamy toffee, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Soft orchard fruit and a creamy vanilla sit behind the cask. The finish is rounded, fruity and clean. This is a light Speyside malt from the banks of the Lossie.
