Description
A Cameronbridge single grain, selected and bottled by Duncan Taylor, a 25 year old single grain distilled in 1979, from cask 3523 and bottled at 59.9%. A release of 194 bottles. Cameronbridge was founded in 1824 by John Haig, of the great Haig distilling family, in Fife. John Haig's cousin Robert Stein invented the continuous still, and Cameronbridge was among the first to run one.
The spirit was made in continuous stills from wheat for a light spirit, for a light, sweet make of real purity. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, the wood adding coconut and vanilla. Past two decades the grain deepens into coconut, toffee and crème brûlée. Light grain takes oak readily, the ex-Bourbon lending coconut and vanilla. A founding member of the Distillers Company in 1877, it is now Diageo's largest distillery. Since Port Dundas closed in 2010, it is Diageo's only wholly owned grain distillery. As well as whisky, it makes the neutral spirit for Gordon's and Tanqueray gin and Smirnoff vodka.
At 59.9%, undiluted, it is deep and sweet. The ex-Bourbon gives toffee, vanilla and a soft oil. A butterscotch and a creamy oak lift it. A sweet, coconut led finish lingers. This is a soft, oily single grain from Cameronbridge.
