Description
From Duncan Taylor comes this Tormore matured to 24 year old from 1990, drawn from cask 1590 and bottled at 53.6%. Only 241 bottles were released. Tormore was first built between 1958 and 1960 beneath the Cromdale Hills in Speyside; its light malt long fed the Long John blend. Long a filler for the Long John and Ballantine's blends, Tormore was rarely seen as a single malt.
The spirit was run through purifier stills for a light, clean spirit, to build a clean, citrussy, almond edged character. A refill American oak cask held it, keeping the clean character to the fore. Long ageing brings a deeper nutty, dried fruit character and a mellow oak. The unpeated spirit lets the wood and the fruit speak without smoke. The new owners released a Blueprint Series of 10 year olds in 2025 ahead of a full range. Its rise in 1958 broke a long pause in distillery building that had lasted decades.
At a hearty 53.6% it carries real weight. A nutty, orchard fruit sweetness sit alongside soft vanilla and honey from the cask. A green apple and a citrus note lift it. Green apple and almond draw out the close. This is the architectural jewel of Speyside in a glass.
