Description
For years the 8 Year Old was the only Littlemill most drinkers met, the standard bottling from a distillery whose roots reach to 1772 at Bowling on the Clyde, proven to be the oldest licensed distillery in Scotland. It under-sold a fine spirit, but it is an honest young taste of the place.
Littlemill ran a famously light Lowland make, the spirit drawn off straight-neck stills fitted with rectifying columns rather than the usual swan necks, a Duncan Thomas innovation that stripped weight and left a clean, ester-rich distillate. Eight years in ex-Bourbon barely touched it.
At 40% the lignin in the oak has given a little vanillin for vanilla, but the spirit leads: hay, malt and a leafy, faintly yeasty freshness. With the distillery demolished in 2005, even the young bottlings are now finite. A genuine young Littlemill.
