Description

This is Batch 1 of Lagg's Inaugural Release, the first single malt from the young peated Isle of Arran distillery, a 3 year old distilled in 2019. Manager Graham Omand described it as a naked young whisky meant to set the benchmark, an outturn of 10,000 bottles. Lagg opened in 2019 to bring peated whisky back to Arran, where the last legal distillery closed in 1837.

The barley here is peated to around 50ppm, well into heavily peated territory. Matured in ex-Bourbon casks and bottled young at near cask strength, the smoke comes through raw and direct.

Bottled at 50% without chill filtration or added colour. Guaiacol and phenols drive the young peat smoke, the ex-Bourbon giving vanilla. Tasting notes take in citrus, a vegetal note, a medicinal edge, smoke, a cooked vegetable note and a hay-like edge. The ex-Bourbon benchmark of Lagg's first release.
