Description
Distilled on 20 September 2004 and bottled in August 2023, this 18 year old single malt from Bushmills was initially matured in a combination of bourbon and oloroso sherry casks before an extended finish in Spanish brandy barrels. Bottled at 54.3 percent ABV, this release forms part of The Causeway Collection and reflects a deliberate approach to late-stage cask selection.
After nearly two decades in wood, the spirit has already undergone significant chemical change. Slow oxygen ingress through the cask walls drives oxidation and esterification, reshaping volatile fermentation-derived compounds into more stable molecules associated with deeper, integrated fruit character. Evaporation over time concentrates flavour while reducing volatility, allowing heavier compounds to define aroma and texture rather than sharp alcohol or fleeting esters.
The Spanish brandy cask finish is central to how this whiskey presents. Spanish brandy is typically matured in ex-sherry casks and often handled oxidatively through solera systems, meaning the wood carries a layered history of fortified wine and spirit contact before whiskey ever enters it. This leaves behind pre-oxidised sugars, aldehydes and wood compounds embedded deeper into the staves than is typical of other brandy casks. When mature whiskey enters these barrels, it extracts weight and structure rather than fresh aromatic lift, reinforcing darker dried fruit and nut-led richness.
On the nose, the whiskey shows concentrated dried fruit, dark berries and baked fruit notes, supported by toasted oak and warm spice. The palate is full and structured, with figs, dates and orange peel layered over honeyed sweetness and subtle chocolate tones. The elevated bottling strength helps carry these heavier compounds cleanly, preventing the profile from flattening while maintaining balance. The finish is long and steady, with fruit depth and controlled spice lingering as the oak influence slowly recedes.
