Description
A Wolfburn single malt, a 3 year old, bottled at 46%. Just 16000 bottles were filled. Wolfburn is the most northerly distillery on the Scottish mainland, at Thurso in Caithness, where whisky has flowed again since 2013. Most of the make is unpeated, with a lightly peated malt distilled since 2014 for a gentle smoke.
It was worked through the distillery's small copper stills, for a light, citrussy spirit with a sea air lift. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak for a honeyed sweetness. Young here, it keeps a clean, fruity vigour over light vanilla. The light, clean make takes cask character readily across maturation. Most of the make is unpeated, with a lightly peated malt distilled since 2014 for a soft smoke. The core range runs Northland, Aurora, Morven and Langskip, names drawn from the far north. The Kylver Series gathers single casks named for the runes of an ancient Caithness stone.
At 46% it is smooth and fresh. Green apple, vanilla and a sea air lift, and honeyed vanilla comes through from the ex-Bourbon. The texture is light and fresh, the fruit lifted by a coastal salt. The finish runs light, coastal and crisp. This is Wolfburn's clean, coastal Thurso single malt.
