Wolfburn 200th Anniversary Edition

Wolfburn 200th Anniversary Edition, a single malt from the far north distillery at Thurso, bottled at 50%. Just 1821 bottles were filled. Wolfburn brought whisky back to Thurso in 2013, reviving a name first raised in 1821 just up the burn. Most of the make is unpeated, with a lightly peated malt distilled since 2014 for a gentle smoke.

It was drawn off a single pair of Forsyths copper stills, for the light, fresh, maritime make Wolfburn is known for. Ex-Sherry wood added a dried fruit richness to the fresh make. Without an age statement, it is light, coastal and fruity. The clean spirit shows the cask clearly, the wood adding much of the colour. The new distillery stands about 350 metres from the old ruins, sharing the Wolf Burn that names them both. It is the most northerly distillery on the Scottish mainland, a stop on the North Coast 500.

At a hearty 50% it carries real punch. A crisp, coastal fruit, and the Oloroso lends raisin, walnut and a dried fruit richness. It is clean and fruity, the young spirit shining through. A fruity, gently saline finish lingers. This is a fruity Highland malt from Scotland's most northerly mainland distillery.
