Description
W. & J. Graham's Tawny Port 40 Years Old is a long-aged Tawny from one of the leading houses of Vila Nova de Gaia, carrying an age indication of more than forty years. The Master Blender composes it from wines set aside across generations of the family, held for decades before assembly.
The wine ages oxidatively in lodge pipes of around 600 litres, stored in cool, humid Port lodges. Over forty years slow oxidation strips the colour back to golden amber with a green-tinged rim, concentrates the wine as it evaporates, and builds the layered caramel, nut and dried-fruit character that only extended cask time can give.
It is powerfully fragrant, with brown bread, fig compote, toasted toffee and chocolate giving way to date, walnut, singed almond and a streak of bitter orange on a very long finish. Serve it in small measures at room temperature as a digestif, with coffee and dark chocolate, or beside a cigar.
