Description
Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin builds La Grande Dame around Pinot Noir from the house's historic Grand Cru holdings, with Chardonnay for freshness, and this 2018 rosé takes its colour from a measured addition of still red wine. It is a vintage wine, drawn from a single harvest, and made by the traditional method with the second fermentation in bottle. A long maturation on the fine lees follows, and that autolytic ageing gives the biscuity, creamy depth that frames the fruit in a prestige cuvee. The dosage is kept to a brut level so the wine finishes dry and structured rather than soft.
The colour is a bright pale pink with a fine, sustained mousse. The nose shows strawberry, raspberry and red currant with cherry behind, layered over toasted bread, biscuit and a creamy note. On the palate it is full and precise, the red fruit set against firm acidity and a savoury, autolytic depth, closing long and dry. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees in a white wine glass rather than a flute so the wine can open. It suits richer shellfish, roast poultry and game birds. Presented in its gift box, it makes a considered present.
