Description

The Spirit of Art is an Italian bottler Valinch & Mallet's single cask, drawn from Mauritian rum distilled from fresh sugarcane juice. Mauritius sits outside the protected agricole appellations, so this is agricole-style cane juice rather than a legal rhum agricole, here a 2014 vintage matured eight years in ex-bourbon oak and bottled at full cask strength.

At 57.2% it is a punchy, single barrel pick aimed at drinkers who like cane juice rum with some heat. The nose runs to banana, mango and a medicinal lift, the palate to vanilla, caramel and sweetness, the finish woody and dry with sugarcane underneath. It drinks hot and a touch youthful, so a few drops of water help; one for the curious chasing a different cane juice origin rather than polished elegance.
