A pot still Barbados single cask from 2001 at twenty-two years and 51.1%, warm and fruity with marzipan, lemon, orange peel and banana over controlled oak, drying into spice and dried fruit, mature without the wood taking over.
Description
This Valinch & Mallet release in The Spirit of Art series is a single cask of pot still Barbados rum from the 2001 vintage, the Saint Michael parish tag pointing to West Indies Rum Distillery stock. Held twenty-two years and bottled at a full 51.1%, it leans on the richer, heavier pot still end of the island's output rather than the lighter column style.
Distilled from molasses and aged in ex-bourbon oak, it opens on marzipan, lemon, banana and wood, then turns to orange peel, oak and roasted notes on the palate, with a warm finish of wood, spice and dried fruit. Despite the long ageing the oak stays controlled and the fruit holds its place, and the 51.1% is well integrated. A serious, balanced single cask for drinkers who like well-aged Barbados but want a drier, more individual take than the mainstream releases.
