Light caramel, prunes, dried fruit and herbal notes make this 27 Year Old Diamond and Versailles blend from Valinch and Mallet a thoughtful, restrained pot still sipper at 52.6 percent, gentler than its long age suggests.
Description
Valinch and Mallet bottled this Diamond from the 1996 vintage in its Spirit of Art series, a twenty-seven year old drawing on the Versailles single wooden pot still character within the Diamond distillery that runs Guyana's heritage stills. The result leans more reserved than many old Demeraras of this vintage.
Molasses based and matured in ex-bourbon oak, it is a restrained, continental style sipper. The nose shows varnished wood, raisin, dried apricot and fermented yellow fruit, with mango and papaya appearing with time, while the palate turns to light caramel, vanilla, liquorice, lemon peel and prunes over dry timber. The finish is woody and lightly medicinal. The strength stings a touch and the aromas take coaxing. At 52.6 percent it is drinkable and characterful but quieter than its age implies, one for patient drinkers who enjoy a gentler old Versailles.
