Description
Meadowside Blending selected this Tobermory matured to 24 year old from 1994, drawn from cask 5145 and bottled at 49.2%. A release of 226 bottles. Tobermory is the unpeated single malt of Mull's only distillery, founded in 1798 in the island's painted harbour town. The single malts are bottled without chill filtration at 46.3 percent or higher.
Drawn off stills with their S shaped lyne arms, for a medium bodied, fruity spirit. A sherry cask wrapped the waxy spirit in dried fruit and a nutty depth. Past twenty years the spirit turns honeyed and waxy while keeping its fruit. Long maturation turns the green young spirit towards honey and ripe fruit. The town of Tobermory was laid out by the British Fisheries Society a decade before the distillery came. The distillery's history is broken by long silences; its buildings once stored a local cheddar. Burn Stewart revived production in 1993, and Distell bought the distillery in 2013.
At a hearty 49.2% it carries real weight. Green apple, citrus and a herbal lift, and the Oloroso brings dried fruit, fig and a nutty depth. It is fruity and full, the oily spirit shining through. It closes long, waxy and fruity. This is Tobermory's oily, unpeated island single malt.
