Description
Wilson & Morgan bottled this Tobermory, a 20 year old release from 1994, drawn from cask 5043 and bottled at 50%. Only 640 bottles were released. Tobermory is the fruity, unpeated side of the only distillery on the Isle of Mull. Burn Stewart revived the distillery in 1993, and Distell of South Africa bought it in 2013.
The spirit was drawn off stills with their S shaped lyne arms, for a medium bodied, fruity spirit. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut. Past twenty years the spirit turns honeyed and waxy while keeping its fruit. Sea air works into the island maturation, lending a faint saline lift. Both malts feed the Scottish Leader and Black Bottle blends as well as single malt. The distillery was refurbished and its stills renewed between 2017 and 2019. Mull's maritime climate works into the maturing casks over the years. It is one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland still working.
At 50%, undiluted, it is rich and deep. Green apple, citrus and a herbal lift, and the Oloroso adds figgy fruit and a warm nuttiness. It is fruity and full, the oily spirit shining through. The finish runs fruity, nutty and warm. This is Tobermory's oily, unpeated island single malt.
