Description
Bottled by Duncan Taylor, this Tobermory, a 10 year old island malt from 2008, drawn from cask 1620626 and bottled at 53.9%. Just 84 bottles were filled. Tobermory is the fruity, unpeated side of the only distillery on the Isle of Mull. Its history is famously broken, with long silences; the buildings once held holiday lets and stored cheese.
Distilled in the kinked copper stills for a fruity spirit, building the oily Tobermory style. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut. At a youthful age the fruit is lively and the malt waxy. The cool, damp island air gives a slow, even maturation. The distillery sits at the head of the bay, beneath a steep wooded hill. Both malts feed the Scottish Leader and Black Bottle blends as well as single malt. The distillery was refurbished and its stills renewed between 2017 and 2019. Mull's maritime climate works into the maturing casks over the years.
At a full 53.9% it is intense and layered. Honey, wax and a soft nut, and the Oloroso adds figgy fruit and a warm nuttiness. It is fruity and full, the oily spirit shining through. It closes long, waxy and fruity. This is an unpeated malt from Mull's only distillery.
