A column still TDL single cask given a Kopke Port finish, woody and port-driven with chocolate, dark berries and spice over a wine-soaked, faintly medicinal close, smooth and approachable at 47.3%.
Description
Bottled by Maison Ferrand under the Planteray name, this is a 2011 vintage TDL from Warehouse #1, a single cask aged just over twelve years and finished in Kopke Port casks. TDL is the column-still arm of the Angostura group in Trinidad, and a Port-finished single cask sits among the more characterful living-Trinidad releases, pitched at drinkers who enjoy a wine-cask influence without going to full proof.
Distilled on the column still and matured before its Port finish, the rum takes a clear stamp from the fortified wood. The aroma is fruity and woody with a sweet, Port-soaked edge, the palate turns to chocolate, spice and pepper over oak, and the finish carries wine, dark berries, leather and a faint medicinal note. The Port influence is plainly present and lends a soft richness, while the body stays smoother and more accessible than a cask strength bottling, an easy-drinking sipper at 47.3%.
