Description
This official Strathearn single malt, a Batch No. 02 bottling, from cask Batch 02 and bottled at 50%. Strathearn is a tiny craft distillery near Methven in Highland Perthshire, founded in 2013. Douglas Laing, the Glasgow bottler behind Big Peat and Scallywag, bought it in 2019.
The spirit was run through small alembic stills after a very long fermentation, to build a vibrant, experimental spirit. Small virgin oak casks gave bold vanilla and spice fast. With no age statement, it shows the bold, fruity character of a young craft malt. Douglas Laing matures and bottles the spirit with the care of a long established blender. Every batch is an experiment, double or triple distilled, peated or unpeated. Water is drawn from Loch Turret, the distillery set in a 160 year old farm steading. Douglas Laing, the Glasgow bottler behind Big Peat and Scallywag, bought it in 2019.
Undiluted at 50%, it is powerful and fruity. Virgin oak gives vanilla and baking spice, the Oloroso dried fruit, over a fruity, oily spirit. A buttery barley and a citrus zest lift it. It finishes fresh, fruity and bold. This is the experimental Highland malt of Strathearn.
