Description
This Strathearn single malt, a Batch No. 02 bottling and bottled at 50%. Strathearn was built in 2013 by Tony Reeman-Clark, a forerunner of Scotland's new wave of craft distilleries. Strathearn makes gin and rum too, true craft spirits in their purest form.
Distilled in miniature alembic stills on Loch Turret water, building the individual Strathearn character. A small sherry cask drove a quick, rich dried fruit character. Without an age statement, it is fresh, oily and cask forward. The young spirit takes colour and flavour readily from the tiny, active casks. The distillery makes gin and rum alongside its experimental whisky. It sits in deepest Perthshire, between Crieff and the whisky town of Perth. Maris Otter barley and a very long ferment give the distillers plenty to work with. Strathearn is probably Scotland's smallest distillery, making about a barrel of spirit a day.
At a full 50% it is deep and lively. The Oloroso brings dried fruit and the ex-Bourbon vanilla, over a fruity, oily spirit. Beneath it run citrus, creamy barley and a warm spice. It closes long, fruity and warm. This is a young, experimental malt from Scotland's smallest distillery.
