Description
Perrier-Jouet is one of the older Champagne houses, founded in Epernay in 1811, with chalk cellars that form part of a UNESCO listing. Grand Brut is its house cuvee, a balanced blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay in an elegant, floral register. It is made by the traditional method, with second fermentation in the bottle and ageing on the lees that builds the fine brioche character. The house set the Brut style early, with a low dosage of under five percent at a time when Champagne was usually far sweeter, and the wine keeps that dry, refined balance today. The magnum allows slow, even ageing.
The colour is a silvery gold with a lively bead. The nose is elegant and floral, with apple, pear and citrus peel over white flowers and a delicate brioche note from the lees. The palate is crisp and fresh with rich fruit, closing long and harmonious. Serve at around 8 to 10 degrees in a tulip glass. It works as an aperitif and alongside white fish, shellfish and white meat in a light sauce.
